Trace/Memory At Evanston Art CenterTrace/Memory at Evanston Art Center
January 11 - February 15
Opening Reception January 11 from 1-4 pm - Artist's Panel at 2 pm
Evanston Art Center
2603 Sheridan Rd., Evanston
Trace/Memory features artists who are consciously playing with and investigating the transformative process of manipulating information. Memory, like art, is a creative act. Small bits of information gleaned from real world events, objects, activities and emotions are routed, selected, mapped and catalogued for use in creating individual stories. These "traces" are the raw materials of their creations. Using both additive and subtractive processes the artists in Trace/Memory distort and reinvent reality to create each unique work of art. For more information, visit www.evanstonartcenter.org or call 847-475-5300

Two New Exhibits at Block Museum
Polaroids: Mapplethorpe - January 13 thru April 5
From Michelangelo to Annibale Carracci - January 23 thru April 5
Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art
Northwestern University
40 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston
Two new exhibits open at the Block Museum this month. The first, Polaroids: Mapplethorpe, traces Robert Mapplethorpe's use of instant photography from 1970 to 1975. The show brings together 100 works including self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and portraits of friends and lovers such as Patti Smith and Sam Wagstaff. This largely unknown body of work offers insight into the artist's creative development at a formative time in his career. Some of the works in this exhibition may not be suitable for all audiences.

The second exhibit, From Michelangelo to Annibale Carracci: A Century of Italian Drawings from the Prado showcases 70 drawings that explore the working methods of the most important artists active in Italy during a time of unprecedented artistic patronage. Focusing on the period from 1520 to 1620, this exhibition marks the first time that many of these extraordinary drawings have traveled outside of Spain's Prado Museum and includes two recently discovered figural studies for Michelangelo's Last Judgment. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.blockmuseum.northwestern.edu or call 847-491-4000.
